The Silent Patient (Book Review)

'I love him so totally completely, sometimes it threatens to overwhelm me. Sometimes i think ... No. I won't write about that'

Alicia Berenson, a thirty–two years old painter renowned for her work Alcestis, a love story of saddest kind. Alcestis willingly sacrifices her life for her husband, Admetus, dying in his place when no one else will.

There is a pure heart to heart connection of Alicia with Alcestis’ story. And hence she named it Alcestis.

“Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive, and will come forth later, in uglier ways '

                                                                                                                                                             Sigmund Freud

The story begins with Alicia’s diary, even though her love for painting is an outlet for her stirring thoughts. Writing, she tries her hand on continuous pestering from her husband. Alicia kept a lot to herself, though the sole man she confided in is her husband. But he always downplays his feelings and makes fun of anything he finds soppy. he feels he is more of cynical and unsentimental, but Alicia considered him to be the most romantic man.

Keeping journal was like marrying to and confiding in someone more trustworthy than her husband. An evasion from the brutal realities of the world, she finds it soothing, like domination of the canopy of forest in the oppressive and imposing sun.

Life  of Alicia with her husband, Gabriel, was what one can expect of a happy couple. A big house with tall windows facing the park, the most desired place in London. Their art makes them occupied, passionate .

Gabriel, a famous photographer

The husband Alicia adore, he was a Greek God. She promised to love him no matter what, no matter how messy, thoughtless and selfish he would be, she would never leave his side.

Then why she killed him, so brutally, tied him and shot him 5 times on his face. And chose to remain silent thereafter .

Theo Faber, a 42-year-old psychotherapist, who adopts this occupation because his own life was a pool of mess. He is a psychotherapist because he chooses to help people, but actual intention is purely selfish. He was on a quest to help himself and Alicia, whose journey is analogous to Alicia's or it connects him to Alicia through her work Alcestis.

you will discover it yourself when you read it.

#psychology

As the psycho-analyst Donald Winnicott put it:

The development of our personalities doesn't take place in isolation , but in relationship with another- we are shaped and completed by unseen , unremembered forces; namely our parents.

#love

'Choosing a lover is a lot like choosing a therapist'

'We often mistake love for fireworks- for drama and dysfunction. But real love is very quiet, very still. It's boring , if seen from the perspective of high drama. Love is deep and calm -its constant.'

I congratulate Alex Michaelides for his debut novel. It’s my second experiment with psychological thriller after Agatha Christie’s mystery. This book, the silent patient placed him on the winning throne of "Goodreads choice awards 2019 for mystery & thriller” category.

Every character’s part was considerably prominent. I found nothing redundant and unnecessary to make the story appear charade. This novel revolves more around infidelity, emotion, and therapy.

My rating for the book is 4/5 .

Happy Reading…

Falling In Love Again , Book Review

Falling in love again is probably the best thing that can happen to a young writer. It gives a certain spontaneity and intensity to his writing.  Falling in love again is a fusion of short, beautiful, unconventional love stories written by Ruskin bond. Those unconventional stories ring true to each of us, and many can relate to it in their lives.  It will be unfair in part of those who say they never fell in love, for they had been ignorant throughout their lives, they forget that their life had been a long love story. In the journey of life, they fall in love with the sun, the moon, flowers, books, roads, old trees, grannies and they will keep falling in love till their last breath.  The eyes have it  It is a nudge to those who turn blind eyes to the beauty of nature, chirping of a bird, hide and seek of sun and clouds, for they have too much to take in, and people with good eyesight cannot see what is right in front of them.  The subseque...

Five Books That Changed My Life

I had grown up seeing my father reading lots and lots of books and because he would read a lot, I never found him at loss for words.   He was an avid reader and a prolific writer. Not only he would read, but also he had written a good number of articles. He was a great leader; he could influence anybody. Be at the dinner table or at his office conference’s, he would win million hearts.    H e was a man of letters, extremely erudite His presence would daunt normal people. He would always egg us on reading books. As a kid, I would turn deaf ear to his persuasions for reading.  But later on, when I entered college, I found my way to the fiction and self-help section in the college library, though my father had maintained a full-fledged library which comprised almost all the genres, Issuing a book from the library would give me extra motivation owing to the timeline it would come with.  When I set out on the path of reading, I had promised myself to read at least 50...
